When Did Job Titles Get So Confusing?

Have you noticed that there are more job titles out there than ever before? There’s a title for every single variation of a position that you could possibly imagine. In some ways this is good because it denotes specialty areas. In other ways it’s bad because it makes it hard to know exactly what someone really does.

Part of the reason that we have such specialized titles these days is because of the fact that new technology has created so many unique and individualized jobs. We now have advanced electronic document management systems and networked scanning system providers and all of these high-tech positions that need their own names because their fields are new.

This makes sense. However, it doesn’t take away the confusion. Do you know what a networked scanning system provider does? Probably not unless you happen to work in that field. So, I suppose that these advanced titles have made it so that you really need to be an insider in the industry to understand what different titles mean. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. I just know that it’s a trend that I’ve been noticing and I’m curious as to whether or not it’s going to continue over time.
