SBA Offers Free Classes

The Small Business Administration (SBA) is a great organization. It assists small business owners with many different aspects of business. One of the best things about the SBA is that it offers free classes (online as well as in person) which can teach you what you need to know to run a small business effectively. I think that all small business owners should look into these classes. They provide a great education, offer a terrific chance to network with others and they don’t cost a dime.

I’ve taken tons of different SBA classes. The most recent one was about how to buy mailing lists. The class taught me how to determine my business’s market demographics, find the most affordable mailing lists and then use those lists appropriately in order to gain the most amount of business from them. This isn’t something that I knew how to do before taking the class so it was really valuable to me.

Not all of the classes that I’ve taken through the SBA were valuable. Some instructors are better than others. Some information is more relevant to me than other information is. But the classes are free so it’s not like I felt like they were any sort of waste. Believe me, it’s worth looking into.

You Can Call me Doctor

I had a big chuckle when I grew up from a boy to a man. You see, it was a shock for someone to call me “mister” and it made me sound weird, not to mention old. But I guess for most of us, that is just a stepping stone on our journey of life.

But I had no idea that I would end up encountering a similar experience in my forties. I had to laugh the first time that someone called me “doctor” after I received my Doctor of Health Education. I guess I should have known that it would happen, but it seemed a little surreal when it did.

Looking back, I guess that I called my professor in the Human Movement program I was taking in college “doctor” too, but at the time, I never really thought about it. Now that people call me “doctor”, I have to try to not let it get to my head.

But I am proud to say that I can wear my title as a badge of honor from all of the years I spent in school. Like a medal of accomplishment, I will be reminded every time someone addresses me as “doctor” that I accomplished something in my life.

Need Books For Class…

Well another semester is about to start and, as always, the great book hunt begins. Like many ASU kids out there, I’m scraping by each semester and can barely afford to feed myself let alone spend hundreds of dollars on books. I am taking a few classes this semester which are particularly harsh on my wallet. One is a website builder class that requires a great big fat book of PHP solutions. The used version of the book costs over a hundred dollars so I am wondering if anyone has it and they’d like to sell to me for cheaper.

For this same class I also need a book on Dreamweaver extensions. I am pretty familiar with how these work though so if anyone has a different version that isn’t the exact required book, I’d like to take a look at it. It basically needs to have a run down on each different CSS extension from shopping carts to installing a chat room on your website. That’s it for that class. The other one that has particularly high priced books is my Shakespeare class. I need the Norton anthology of all of Shakespeare’s works which I can’t find anywhere used. If anyone has this or another version of his full body of work, I would be happy to pay you for it. Thanks! Have a great semester.

Changing Mind About School Is Tough

A large percentage of college students end up changing their major at least once during the time that they are in college. It’s never an easy decision but it’s definitely something that’s easier to do when you are going to a large university than when you are going to a smaller school that’s supposed to be teaching you a niche type of job.

Imagine that you decide that you are really interested in pursuing a golf career. You take the time to research all of the golf schools that are available to you before choosing the golf college that you think is perfect. Then you spend a whole lot of time justifying the decision to go to a golf college to all of the friends and family members who would rather see you just go to a university.

Most people who take this path will end up with a golf career that they love. However, a small percentage of people will realize during the course of their education that the golf school actually isn’t the right place for them. These people will find it a lot harder to drop out, choose a new school and switch gears than their peers at universities will find it to switch majors. It can be tough but in the end the important thing is always to do what’s right for you even if what’s right seems to keep changing.
