That First Cavity

My best friend just sent me a text message telling me that he just got home from the dentist’s office where he found out he had three cavities. He was devastated. He’s about to enter his thirties and has never had a cavity in his life. It’s almost as though he thought that he would be immune to them forever for some reason.

This is completely foreign to me since I’ve had cavities since practically the day my teeth first came in. My dentist Washington DC phone number is programmed into my cell phone. I even have a specific Washington D C cosmetic dentist that I have seen for Washington DC teeth veneers and other things to help my ailing smile. I’ve always kind of felt like the dentist was inevitably going to give me bad news.

In terms of the health of your teeth, it’s obviously better to get your first cavity later rather than sooner. It’s certainly not a good sign of dental health that I had caps on my baby teeth. But in terms of the psychological impact of the first cavity, I think it’s a lot better to get it over with when you’re young so you’re not panicking when it finally happens.
