Thoughts on Dog Grooming

fuzzy dog

My husband and I have had a heck of a time with our shepherd.  As is common with the Australian shepherd breed, she has been shedding a lot all summer, and it seems like no matter how much grooming we do we can’t keep up with it all.

When we were walking her at the park the other day, though, someone suggested we try the Furminator.  This is apparently a great tool for shedding a dog’s undercoat without damaging the top coat, which is really what we need.  It’s the soft, downy undercoat that we’re finding all over the place around the house — and I swear, she sheds enough of it to make another dog!

Something else we might try is a knock-off Furminator that a friend recommended to me.  My friend has a Chesapeake Bay retriever, and has found the knock-off to be pretty effective at shedding his undercoat.

I guess if the knock-off doesn’t work, we’ll have to consider spending the extra money on the Furminator, which is $30 even at Amazon.com (which I would have thought would be cheaper).  It’s a lot to pay, but perhaps if it stops us from living in a sea of fur, it’ll be  worth it!
