Even Dad Can Change

My father is a stubborn man. He is set in his ways. He likes to be grumpy and cynical and there’s nothing that we can do to change that. He never asks for directions and he always has the last word. But I discovered recently that even my dad can change.
You see, my dad has been suffering from hearing loss for years. We realized it a long time before he probably did. He would accuse us of muttering even though everyone else in the room could hear us just fine. We’d have to speak louder and louder for him to hear us. Still, he insisted that there was nothing wrong with his hearing. We were the problem, according to him.
I never thought that he would change his mind about this issue. However, the last time that I visited him, he was wearing a hearing aid. I didn’t make a big deal out of it because I knew that he probably didn’t want to actually have to admit out loud that we had been right about his hearing loss. Still, I was glad to see that he’d gotten it. And it made me smile inside to know that even my dad can stop being stubborn when he needs to.
